BROKEN CHORD

GREGORY MAQOMA | THUTHUKA SIBISI
South Africa

Gregory Maqoma is a long-established, versatile South African artist. In creating Broken Chord, he drew on the history of the African Choir, a young African choral ensemble that achieved success in England at the end of the 19th century. Despite gaining popularity at the time, the Choir and its music disappeared and never made it into history. Gregory Maqoma commissioned an imagined re-working of the music to revive individual stories to recreate an identity for this memory. During the performance, he is alone on stage with four singers who engage in a musical duel performed live by the Torino Vocalensemble choir. The choir recounts the history of South Africa and its musical traditions, reflecting on pressing global issues such as borders, migration and identity.
