edizione 2023

Torinodanza seeks to capture the facts, ideas and turmoil that unsettle our troubled times. By reading between the lines of the programme, several avenues of enquiry emerge, which intend to deliver an overview of today’s state of the art in contemporary dance. In this edition, we have turned the spotlight on leading companies engaged in combining classical dance fundamentals with contemporary languages: the Sidney Dance Company with Rafael Bonachela, the Grand Théatre de Genève Ballet with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, and the Batsheva Dance Company with Ohad Naharin. We thus aim to explore the fine line between tradition and innovation, which has shifted over the years due to research, citations and cross-references, all of which have contributed to how choreography has evolved up to the present day.  Torinodanza has not, however, abdicated from showcasing emerging international choreographic trends. This year they are emblematically represented by Oona Doherty, the young Belfast choreographer. It also continues to follow the work of artists dear to us, namely Akram Khan and Peeping Tom, with their most recent creations. Our commitment to supporting Italian choreography also never ceases and can be seen the presence of several artists, including Silvia Gribaudi, Ginevra Panzetti and Enrico Ticconi, Francesca Pennini, Teodora, and Agata Castellucci.

We are delighted and pleased to have created the Vetrina Artwaves (Artwaves Showcase), which features the winning projects of the Call for Submissions launched two years ago by the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation in the areas of dance, circus and the visual arts: Egri Bianco Danza, BBT with Carlo Massari, Piergiorgio Milano, Daniele Ninarello with Eva Frapiccini, and Francesco Sgrò with Cordata FOR.

Hence, a variety of strands runs through the 2023 edition of the Festival, thanks to which a common subtext can be detected, a sort of metaverse in which events unfold, and new imagery is created, expressing the spontaneous yearning humanity has for harmony with the environment and nature, with its peers and opposites. For years now, through the Festival, we have undertaken to narrate the vision artists have of our present. Our firm belief is that the expressive power of the body can capture questionings and needs that gather us in a common breath while immersing us in the imaginative power of theatre. Acknowledgements are never mere formalities. They are sincere tributes to the institutions that, in such changing times, keep supporting art, entertainment and culture as crucial assets in constructing a self-aware, sustainable and inclusive society. First of all, I would like to thank the Teatro Stabile di Torino, with whom we share daily reflections, doubts, eagerness and ideas; the Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, with whom we develop our existing projects and future prospects, engaging in a dialogue that reflects our mutual goals; and Intesa San Paolo, a remarkable model of enlightened sponsorship. I also wish to thank all the public institutions: the City of Turin, which continues to contend its role as the Italian capital of dance; the Region of Piedmont, a loyal fellow traveller from the very beginning and now, as we look to the future; the City of Moncalieri with its magnificent stage at the Fonderie Limone; and the MIC Italian Ministry of Culture, which has intensified its support for dance over the years. As always, we are happy to have our path intersect with many of the leading cultural players from the Turin area, thereby providing an increasingly vibrant and far-reaching perspective of our region: Fondazione per la Cultura Torino, MITO SettembreMusica, Teatro Regio, Fondazione Piemonte dal Vivo with the Lavanderia a Vapore di Collegno – Residential Centre for Dance, Associazione Mosaico Danza and Festival Interplay, Fondazione TPE, Teatro Ragazzi e Giovani, Museo del Cinema and Cinema Massimo. And lastly, I would like to thank the companies and artists whose dance will delight our Turin autumn.
