Theme and Variations
George Balanchine had a lifelong special relationship with Pëtr Il’ič Čajkovskij’s music through his rich production perfectly suited to choreographies. Themes and variations comes from the last movement of Suite N 3  in G in and is an example of  Balanchine’s sublime ability to orchestrate bodies and lines of movement.

Forgotten Land
Jirí Kylián, the great master of contemporary choreography is coming to Torinodanza bringing a well known masterpiece, Forgotten Land, and with a first for Italy: 27’52”. Forgotten land is one of Jirí Kylián’s most appealing performances of his over 100 creations: the image of an underwater world  is the main source of inspiration with a precise reference to Britten’s birthplace in East Anglia, the music of that area having inspired the choreographer.

«1687 hours of individual rehearsals with dancers / 182.5 hours with the assistant choreographer in studio/ 629 hours to create the score / 46 hours to prepare and record vocal registrations/ 229 hours of preparation (meetings, ateliers and production) /15 hours for music research /438 hours to design and prepare costumes /20 hours for lighting / mise en scène /12 hours for stage shots / 93 hours physiotherapy /900 hours choreography /46 hours preparation of classical courses /51 hours organization of the new production /35 hours for the programme/20.75 hours for the bills/14.5 hours for the studio photos which means 4418,75 hours for this production. you PARA | DISO
Company Emio Greco | PC
How can we deal with such an abstract, ethereal and slightly boring place after the mocking, irreverent and dynamic HELLL  and [purgatorio]POPOERA? How can the spiritual space par excellence turn into kinetic energy? The answer is held in you PARA |DISO which concludes Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten’s choreographic project started in 2006 and inspired by Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy (La Divina Commedia). It is not Dante’s words spelt out in images but a choreography which aims at unveiling the deepest memories of the body. “Choreography is a means to travel and visit other spaces. Paradise is a utopia but unlike the Inferno or Purgatory is lacks empathy. It is always illuminated, the lights are on. What would we become if we were ever to reach that spiritual balance? What is we attained that non-possibility of changing?”  (Emio Greco)

CAVALLERIZZA REALE MANEGGIO
Rosas danst Rosas
Rosas Company
Four women standing up, backs to the audience: their first movement is to fall backwards, as if they were close to toppling over. The only sound to be heard is the noise of a human body and of its movements: snorting, breathing, falling, sprinting. Then music by  Thierry De Mey and  Peter Vermeersch starts playing: it is the soul of the second half of the piece.  Rosas danst Rosas is a piece on tension, the contrast between rationality and emotions, the dialectics between aggressiveness and tenderness, the interaction between unison and counterpoint. Repeated the world throughout it has become a milestone  in the evolution of contemporary dance.

Nouvelle Vague - Génération Bagnolet

In 1969 Jaques Chaurand created the International Choreography prize in thus shedding light on the new generation of French Choreographers: it is the beginning of the nouvelle danse.  Nouvelle Vague, Génération Bagnolet, offer some of the best pieces to compete: Chansons de nuit by Dominique Bagouet, Suite by Jean-Claude Gallotta, Chiquenaudes by Daniel Larrieu and  Marché noir by Angelin Preljocaj. Emilio Calcagno inspires new life into these pieces offering  the unmistakable taste of the Nineteen Eighties through the costumes, the bright colours, the spiky epaulette, the tapered trousers  but also tank to the fresh interpretation of the young dancers.

May B
Company Maguy Marin

A breathtaking intertwining of imagination and sense of the absurd : May B  is a choreography which finds its barycentre  in Samuel Beckett, a way to rethink and meditate on the absurdity of life. Ten dancers on scene give life to the characters of the master of the absurd, dressed in pyjamas: a mismatch for their eagerness to discover, a quest which starts with sex through which they discover convulse and feverish movements, animated by a growing range of emotions. ‘ Anti-pretty aesthetics – says Sergio Trombetta – a homage to the world of Samuel Beckett which was to bring fame to the choreographer of Spanish descent born in Tulouse’. Maguy Marin created May B  in 1981, an increasingly lively and powerful piece which is still being performed after nearly three decades.

les ballets C de la B

‘Everyone can easily retrace the first time(s) in their lives – says Bart Van den Eynde – the first time we drove, the first time someone lied to us, the first time we were kissed. They are moments we carry with us be it conscious or unconscious and that we compare to our daily experiences’. les ballets C de la B perform primero: Lisi Estaras and five performers re-experience the place of the ‘first times’ on the notes of klezmer music, expressly composed by the clarinetist Yom, close to Estaras’s  memories and roots. A green field and ancient wooden furniture to recreate the image of a playground or more specifically of a séjour  in memory land.

Out of Context - for Pina
les ballets C de la B

This new performance leads Alain Platel to research a language of movement able to voice the subconscious, arbitrariness and the uncontrolled feelings: spasms, convulsions and nervous habits pepper the choreography. As the playwright Hildegard De Vuyst states: ‘ Out of Context  belongs to a mental space, diving into the meanders of existence, researching the roots of childhood and prehistory. Seeking something that is found n human beings and animals alike, harmony overcoming the duality between beautiful and ugly, good and evil, you and I, the single being and the community.  Out of Context is a sort of ritual, a collection during which one is launched into seeking an unattainable essence.’

Vanessa Van Durme tickled the two directors’ imaginations and the interest of the  composer Steven Prengles’s interest: thus last June gardenia was born, a pièce on cultivated and lost interests which Van Dorme interprets with other transsexual and transvestite friends (Marinella Guattarini).
