Torinodanza seeks to capture the facts, ideas and turmoil that unsettle our troubled times. By reading between the lines of the programme, several avenues of enquiry emerge, which intend to deliver an overview of today’s state of the art in contemporary dance. In this edition, we have turned the spotlight on leading companies engaged in combining classical dance fundamentals with contemporary languages: the Sidney Dance Company with Rafael Bonachela, the Grand Théatre de Genève Ballet with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, and the Batsheva Dance Company with Ohad Naharin. We thus aim to explore the fine line between tradition and innovation, which has shifted over the years due to research, citations and cross-references, all of which have contributed to how choreography has evolved up to the present day.

Torinodanza has not, however, abdicated from showcasing emerging international choreographic trends. This year they are emblematically represented by Oona Doherty, the young Belfast choreographer. It also continues to follow the work of artists dear to us, namely Akram Khan and Peeping Tom, with their most recent creations.
